Frequently Asked Questions

"We hear only those questions for which we are in a position to find answers." ~ Friedrich Nietszche

What is a Social Worker?
Social workers hold many different roles.  They can be community builders, policy makers, advocates, or someone who works within social service organizations. Ultimately, they are concerned with helping individuals, families, groups and communities to enhance their individual and collective well-being.  As a Registered Clinical Social Worker, I work in the role of clinical practitioner providing therapeutic counselling and I am accountable to the College of Social Workers and Social Services Workers and I abide by their Code of Ethics. Clinical Social Workers in private practice are covered under many insurance benefits plans and Social Worker services may be claimed under medical expenses with your tax return.  Please check with your insurance provider to find out details.

What is the difference between a Clinical Social Worker and Psychologist?   Ultimately there is little difference in Clinical Social Worker services and Clinical Psychologist services.  That said, a Social Worker will consider the social aspects of clients along with their emotional well-being to aid the in the creation of a plan for betterment.  A Psychologist will interpret human behaviour and is more likely to administer evaluative tests.  Social Workers have their base in the clients' social context where as Psychologists have a stronger focus on the study of human behaviour and how the human mind works. More may be found at the Ontario Association of Social Workers and the Ontario Association of Psychologists.

What is Psychotherapy? Anyone who is a practitioner of clinical therapeutic services can be seen as practicing psychotherapy.  In Ontario, act of Psychotherapy is becoming regulated.  Social Workers are included as one of the professions qualified to provide psychotherapy.

What is Narrative Therapy?
Narrative Therapy focuses on the stories told by individuals and people. These stories are shared in a collaborative way with the therapist who considers the broader social context. The therapist works with individuals and people to co-create the preferred story and works with the strengths that each person brings. More can be learned about narrative therapy through The Narrative Therapy Centre of Toronto and Dulwich Centre
